2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis’ Power of Children exhibit exemplifies Dr. King’s words, “The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important”, through the actions of young people, such as Ruby Bridges, Ryan White and Anne Frank.  Although each made a huge impact during their short-lived lives, they also left a legacy that impacts us still today

While most of us want to live a long, healthy life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. felt that the length of a person’s life was not the cornerstone on which quality or success was determined.

As you write your essay, reflect on what a “quality” life means to you – how is quality determined, who determines quality, who might be impacted by your life, etc.

The essay contest is open to Indiana Dept of Education schools for students in grades 6-12. Prizes will be awarded in two age groups: grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Limit of 10 entries per school. Essays must be submitted by February 28, 2010.
