Indiana Cheerleading Competitions Scoresheets
NEW SCORESHEETS: Discussions began at the spring Cheer Competition Review Meeting on March 18 regarding coaches who believed the Indiana Cheer Competition could benefit from reviewing scoresheets, and moving toward judging through more specific "Caption Scoresheets" instead of the overall format we have used in the past. Those who attended the spring meeting were invited back to begin that process, which continued through May and June. We realize these sheets are quite a change from what has been used in the past, but those who developed the sheets believe there are several advantages:
1. Judges will be able to focus their attention more specifically on one or two components of your routine, instead of trying to look at all sections equally.
2. Sub-captions will give you more specific input dealing with the Difficulty, Execution, and Variety of your routine. Although you may find it is more difficult to score a "10" in most captions, I think you will also see how the sheets are designed to reward teams who are able to find a "balance" between elements.
3. Rubrics defining the expectations to achieve specific point totals now appear on the scoresheet (instead of on a separate sheet), so judges and coaches can easily work with those indicators.
4. The roles of technical judges will now be separated onto two different scoresheets. One sheet will deal with NFHS Rules/ ICA Contest Rules/ Timing. A second sheet will deal with Point Deductions for execution of technical skills (i.e.: bobbles and falls) allowing judges on other "caption" sheets to focus on awarding achievement without also tracking falls, mistakes, etc. Judges will work in teams on both technical sheets to give coaches clear input on the point deduction system.
TIMING ADJUSTMENTS: The total time allowed for total routines will continue to be 2:30. Teams will, however, be allowed 1:45 (instead of 1:30) for the music part of their routine if they choose. There is NO MINIMUM music time, so those who choose to use 1:30 (or less) will still be fine - this will just allow coaches more freedom when designing their routines.
We hope you'll see how much time and effort has gone into the development of the new scoring system, and you will be able to plan this summer to see how well your routine could fit these sheets. Networking between coaches will certainly help, as you plan ways for your team to succeed. Our office is working to schedule three informational meetings (one northern, one central, and one southern) to help answer questions for coaches on the new scoresheets. We'll also be working closely with potential judges so they are also informed on the nuances of the new scoring system, and will be prepared to help give you and your team members the best possible experience at the 2008 contest.
