2008 Jr English Documents
Four non-fiction sources for the Indiana Academic Super Bowl Junior Division are being made available on the IASP web site. Although there are several variations of these works available in other locations, the selections below are the ONLY one used by the question writer for this contest. Adobe Reader is required to view or print all of these documents. Several documents are fairly large and may take some extra time to open, depending on your computer and internet connection speed.
Frederick Douglass - Selections from "My Escape From Slavery"
Ralph Waldo Emerson - Selections from "Self Reliance"
Henry David Thoreau - Selctions from "Nature (from Walden)"
Mary Chesnut - Selections from "A Diary From Dixie"

Invitational Competition Information
Many schools choose to enter Invitational competitions, which are organized locally, but use questions provided by IASP. A complete list of 2008 Invitationals Hosts who have contacted the IASP office is available by clicking here. You will see many of the competitions are "Open" (accepting entries). If you would like to host an invitational and have not yet ordered questions, click here to go to the Forms page to find the order form.

Purchasing Practice Questions
IASP will continue to publish practice questions on this web site, which are free, and written by the same question writers as the competition questions. However, many coaches have requested information on how to purchase additional practice questions, which were formerly sold by the Academic Coaches Association. The Lowell Academic Booster Club has taken on that project, and will sell sets of practice questions (approximately 1,000 for junior level, and 1,200 for senior level) for $25. While these questions are not created by the same writers as the competition questions, we believe many coaches may be interested in using these as a tool for their team. For inquiries you should contact Joe Gianotti at jgianotti@hotmail.com or call him at (219) 313-5907.

Description of the Junior Division Indiana Academic Super Bowl

Content

The middle/junior high school (Junior Division) competition will be made up of four subject matter rounds (English, science, social studies, and mathematics) and a fifth interdisciplinary round in which questions may come from any and all of the subject matter rounds. Some interdisciplinary questions will require knowledge of at least two subject areas.

Team Selection

Junior division teams may include up to five squads. Each of the four subject area squads may have a maximum of five students. The interdisciplinary squad may consist of seven students. Any given student may compete on a maximum of two subject area squads and may also compete on the interdisciplinary squad (three squads total). Each subject area squad may consist of one or more grade levels.

Eligibility

Any student enrolled full-time in grades 9-12 is eligible to compete on a high school team. Any full-time student in grades 7 and 8 is eligible to compete on a junior division team. Sixth grade students may participate if they are housed in the same building with the 7th and 8th graders as a middle school. Ninth graders housed in a middle school must either compete with the team from the high school which they will attend or they may compose a team of their own and compete in the high school division. Within these constraints, schools may select their teams in any manner and with any additional criteria they choose.
