Each of the 2 "online" practice tests are set up the same way as the actual competition, with a 30 minute time limit. (you can see the current time, as well as the time remaining in the top right corner of the page). One difference for this practice round, is that you are allowed unlimited attempts at the test - so if you try it & decide you want to retake the test that is fine. You could also try the test on your own to become familiar with it, then let the students try it later.
Science Bowl Explanation
The IASP Department of Student Programs in partnership with
Purdue
University
has developed an online Science Bowl competition for elementary school students in grades 4, 5 & 6. Instead of travling to a host site to compete, teams will take an online test at their school or another internet ready site of their choosing. Indiana Science Standards for grades 5, 6, and 7 have been targeted as the base to build questions for this new activity. The 90 minute contest will use questions created by outside consultants from Science Standards #1, 2, 3, and 6. Practice questions will be released at the September 2 Elementary Academic Coaches Conference. Team practice questions will be made available in November and December. A trial run for practice will take place for all registered teams in December 2006 and will continue to be available through January and February so teams can use it as their schedule allows. The Practice Round will be held for all entrants on January 17, 2007. The Competition will be held on January 31, 2007. If technology is not available at the school, alternate sites may be selected.
A team may be made up of a minimum of four members. There is no maximum number of team members. Only 4 will submit the individual question section, but . Alternate team members may join in conducting the virtual experiment and following team questions with coach’s permission.
The 90 minute on-line contest will present 30 questions to be answered by allowing 30 minutes for team questions related to an on-site, hands-on experiment and the results. 30 minutes for general team questions. The last 30 minutes will be devoted to individual questions. A maximum of 4 computers may be used for this section.
The scoring will give team feed back quickly and state wide results by the next day at noon. Awards will be mailed to teams following the posted results in February. Plaques will be awarded to the top 3 teams in each class. The top team in each class will receive a tour and lunch at Purdue. Ribbons will be sent to the Top Ten teams. A certificate will be emailed to each coach to print for team members. An Academic Competition Science Bowl Champion Banner, for school display, will be given to the top team in each class.
